North Arlington
North Arlington, just across the Potomac from Washington, was originally part of the 10-mile square surveyed in 1791 for the District of Columbia, and was actually a part of the District from 1801 to 1847. However, residents convinced Congress to cede the land (then known as Alexandria County) to Virginia. Connected to D.C. by five bridges, Arlington has spectacular waterfront views. Housing in North Arlington ranges from high-rise condo buildings to 1950s postwar modern homes and contemporary mansions built in the past few years. A lively nightlife is another highlight of this area, from bars and clubs featuring live music to a wide range of ethnic restaurants.
