Washington DC
Hillcrest
Hillcrest, in Southeast D.C. was a rural farming area up until the early 1900s, when it was developed as a suburban-style community with “the highest elevation close to the Capitol,” as real estate promoters touted it (as well as slightly cooler temperatures). Initially the town was segregated, but by the 1940s and ’50s, it had begun to evolve into a thriving Black middle-class neighborhood that earned the nickname “The Silver Coast,” according to the website DCist. Eventually it became home to numerous employees of the Pentagon and other federal agencies. Hillcrest features brick colonial homes and wooden bungalows with spacious lawns on tree-lined streets.
